A little something different from me this morning. My husband just published his third book. Hoofin’ It is about our 30-day northbound trek along California’s iconic John Muir Trail. Nine other hikers joined us, along with three mule trains and four packers. What an adventure!
You’ll find daily maps and photos of our progress as Reg describes the thrills and challenges of life on the trail. You’ll get to know our fellow hikers and learn some history of the trail and the people who have worked over the years to protect the pristine beauty of the Sierra Nevada.

Was this a mule-supported hike? Was your outfitter the Rock Creek Pack Station?

Yes, to both questions. Are you familiar with the trips they offer? Our trek was in 2021. Their itineraries have become quite a bit pricier since then.

We went with Rock Creek on a scheduled trip in 2020 between Virginia and Twin Lakes in northern Yosemite and on a private trip along the JMT between Reds Meadow and Tuolumne Meadows in 2022. The private trip wasn’t cheap even though we had 6 people. But it was about the only way that those of us who no longer backpack were going to see the High Sierra backcountry again.

That’s exactly why we chose a supported trip. For us, it was the lack of experience carrying packs heavy enough for the trip. Having previously lived in Mariposa for 25 years, we really wanted to see the JMT for ourselves. I hope you’ll read the book…it might bring back some memories!
