Battery Point Lighthouse was built in 1856 for a cost of $15,000.  It stands off the coast of Crescent City, California, and is accessible at low tide.

The Mary D. Hume, built in 1881, served 97 years, winning the title of longest serving vessel in the Pacific, a record that still stands today.  Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, she quietly lives out her life in the harbor at Gold Beach, Oregon, not far from where she was built.

 

Growing at an elevation of 8,000 feet, a gnarled and weathered tree clings to a patch of land 2,000 feet above Crater Lake. Silhouetted against the cloud is a dragonfly…they were everywhere!

A lone hiker, unfazed by the dangers of a steep, vertical plunge, stepped out for a closeup view from the rim of Crater Lake.
